When I saw the XM-380 7-Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter online I was skeptical. I wasn’t sure it was going to be that great for low price tag. After all, the last log splitter I had owned had cost over $800. I thought it looked great online so I figured I would give it a try.
With the woodstove-burning season upon us, I had a ton of logs to cut. I was anxious to pull it out of the box to get started. It was pretty easy to assemble although I must say that the directions were a little difficult to understand at times. In the end, however, I had assembled a great looking log splitter.
I looked around at the local hardware store for something I could use as a stand but ended up just going the old fashioned route – two logs standing on end. Truth be told it works great with this model. So I got started. Within an hour you could see my driveway again, my wife was impressed because we no longer had to park on the street.
At first I was worried that I was going to have to call the electrician to install a special outlet so it would have a dedicated line. I got out the extension cords, heavy duty of course, turned it on and away it went effortlessly splitting the logs. It holds logs that are up to 20” long and up to a foot in diameter so it takes care of all the logs I have to be cut.
I have been using it on Birch and Ash and have had no problems at all. In fact, it has been easier to use than the older machine that I had that cost over $500.
